What Is A Dental Crown?
In this video, Dr. Jack Booth explains what a dental crown is, how it differs from a filling, and when a crown is the better option for protecting a tooth long-term.
A dental crown is essentially a cap that covers your entire tooth. With a filling, we remove the cavity or damaged area and patch that specific spot with a white composite material. A crown, on the other hand, surrounds the entire tooth for full coverage and protection.
Crowns are also used on top of dental implants. The implant acts like the root, and the crown is the tooth that sits above it.
Deciding between a filling and a crown depends on how much of the tooth is damaged. If a tooth has large fractures, significant breakdown, or has had a root canal, a crown is often the better choice. The goal is to strengthen the tooth and protect it from future problems.
