Is Bone Grafting Required for Mini Dental Implants?
In this video, Dr. Jack Booth explains when bone grafting is actually necessary, why it’s not always required, and how a conservative approach helps protect your options for future implants.
Whether you need a bone graft depends entirely on your situation. We have grafting materials in the office, and we do use them when they’re truly necessary, but they’re not required for every case. Like everything in dentistry, grafts add cost, so we only recommend them when they provide a real benefit.
They’re most commonly needed for front teeth, where the bone ridge is thin and you want to preserve as much structure as possible for esthetics. But if the area has already healed well and there’s plenty of bone, then you may not need a graft at all.
We take a conservative approach. During extractions, I remove as little bone as possible so we have a healthy site for a future implant. That’s why I often tell patients: if you’re having a tooth removed and you think you might want an implant later, it’s best to see someone who regularly places implants. They’re more experienced with protecting the bone during the extraction.
The bottom line: bone grafting is case-by-case. We’ll give you an honest assessment and only recommend it when it truly helps.
