Do You Offer Sedation Dentistry?
In this video, Dr. Jack Booth explains the sedation options available for dental treatment and how to make the right choice to keep anxious patients comfortable and safe.
Many people feel anxious about dental treatment, often because of past experiences. That’s why sedation options are important. Every method has its own risks and costs, so we choose what’s appropriate based on your health and the procedure.
We offer several levels of sedation:
Local Anesthetic (Numbing Only)
This is the standard approach for most procedures—numbing the area so you don’t feel pain.
Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
This helps you relax while staying fully awake and in control. Its effects wear off quickly.
Oral Sedation With Valium
If you have a ride to and from the appointment, I can prescribe a small dose of Valium to take before you arrive. It takes the edge off and works well for many patients needing extra comfort. This is a simple, predictable option for procedures like extractions or placing a few implants.
Full General Anesthesia
For patients who need extensive treatment or prefer to be completely asleep, we can coordinate general anesthesia with an anesthesiologist at an appropriate facility. This is the safest way to be fully unconscious for dental work. There’s a recovery period afterward, and we guide you through that process.
What we don’t use:
I don’t offer mid-tier IV medications like Versed for “conscious sedation.” It can make patients feel loopy, but it does not put you fully to sleep, and it carries respiratory risks. Given those concerns, I don’t use it in my practice, though some providers do.
For one or two teeth, oral Valium plus local anesthetic is usually sufficient. For larger cases, general anesthesia is often the best and safest experience.
Whatever level of sedation you need, we walk you through the plan so you know exactly what to expect.
